Abbottabad to Sost (for some of us)

It all started just north of Islamabad, in Taxila, an historic place full of Buddist rock carvings, where we stopped in the nearby PTDC (Pakistan Tourism Development Corperation) where there seemed to be a distinct lack of tourists, and hot water, oh, and cold water.

Moving swiftly on, the next stop was Abbottobad, named after Mr Abbott, and a friendly place with a park, the odd colonial building and fast food joints.  Midway through our meal, a pickup truck full of armed police had a good gawp, told us we would need an escort, then promptly disappeared.  Several hours later, back at our hotel, a sharp rap at the door stirred us, two, also armed, police were there pledging to protect us against all odds.

The Road

Everything but

My initial fears of this infamous trade route to China were initially quelled;

  • Road condition was no worse than that we had already experienced
  • Volume of traffic was reasonable considering the number of towns
  • Overtaking manoeuvres were as equally death defying as in the rest of Pakistan

These three factors may have lulled me into a false sense of security...

Our first photo opportunity didn't fail to please, but it didn't take long for some school kids to shyly start begging, somewhat spoiling the moment

Next stop was Besham

Besham 7 am

I (Pete) seem to have lost some content from this page, Opps sorry Caf.
